Hematopoietic stem cell transplantation (economic aspects)
Abstract
Numbers of hematopoietic stem cells transplantation (HSCT) increase worldwide. The increasing use of this expensive treatment modality has economic aspect. Transplant rates (number of HSCT per 10 million inhabitants), donor type and disease indications differ significantly between countries and regions. Transplant rates increase preferentially in high income countries and aren’t changed in low or medium income countries. The widening gap between low and high income countries and the significant regional differences suggest that different strategies are required in individual countries to foster the development of HSCT as cost effective treatment modality. The described differences reflect rather differences in resources than in opinions of the national medical communities on the value of a given treatment.
